We fought to defend democracy – let’s renew it for the 21st century
Simply having elections now and again isn’t enough.
Openness, transparency and democratic consent are vital to a healthy democracy.
Politicians have betrayed our trust time and time again. We need new rules that limits their power and puts the people well and truly in the driver’s seat.
Key objectives of political reform
Prevent deceptive loss of national sovereignty
Never again should the political class be free to trade away our sovereignty without the people’s consent first.
Powers are merely lent to politicians, they’ve no right to give them away.
Policies tailored to local communities
One size does not fit all. Different regions and counties have different needs compared to others.
Major policies should revolve around these unique needs.
Simplify and clarify local government
Between borough and district councils, county councils, city mayors and national government, good luck knowing where exactly decisions are made.
We must make it clearer who is accountable.
Prevent undemocratic constitutional change
While we cannot directly change the laws that govern us, the politicians must not be able to change the laws that govern them.
Major changes to our constitution must require democratic consent.
Enhance voter choice
Fed up with both Labour and the Conservatives? If you live in a so-called “safe seat” you know that your vote will count for little.
Our elections must be more open so the voter has a meaningful choice.
The changes we urgently need
Key policies for repairing our constitution
New Constitution & Bill of Rights
We will propose a renewed Bill of Rights that affords citizens guaranteed protection of their liberty and our democracy.
No more transfers of power to undemocratic overseas authorities or unjust infringements on basic personal freedom.
Free Speech Protection
To highlight one particular freedom protected by the above-mentioned Bill of Rights, is the freedom of speech.
Incitement of lawless action will not be protected, but the free flow of information, ideas and opinions, offensive or not, will.
Devolution to Counties / Cities
We will devolve major powers such as health, education, housing, policing and criminal justice down to counties and cities.
One size does not fit all. We envisage more tailored policy-making within local communities and greater accountability.
Self-Funded Local Councils
Replacing a restrictive reliance on government funding and back-seat driving, a Local Sales Tax will fund local authorities.
Local authorities will have the power to raise the rate of Local Sales Tax in order to fund council spending, or to lower it to encourage consumer spending.
To decide a constitutional matter, the people will have the power to trigger a referendum.
The people shall decide the power their politicians have and don’t have, not politicians.
Elected House of Lords
We will abolish an unelected House of Lords and introduce an elected second chamber.
A House of Lords stuffed with friends of the sitting government is not justifiable in the 21st century.
And something that must never change…
We will never recommend rejoining the European Union.
The United Kingdom must remain a free, independent and democratically self-governing country in full control of its own laws and its own future.
